In 2026-2027, our community will include 700 students in grades 6-12, nearly 500 alumni, over 150 faculty members, and hundreds of families. As a Middle School Assistant Principal You believe in creating an educational experience where students are able to see themselves reflected in the content of your class. Role in Context The Assistant Principal is second in command, serving as both an instructional and culture leader in the school. The Assistant Principal plays a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining a school culture that prioritizes student achievement and positive outcomes. This leader works in close partnership with the Chief of Schools and the Middle School Principal to foster a school environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The AP is a key member of the Middle School Leadership Team (MSLT) and functions as the bridge between the principal and the rest of the MSLT and school staff. The AP is responsible for providing input on how to translate district priorities to school level strategy. The AP must balance the big picture with the details, generate buy-in and ownership with staff members, and propel the schools instructional goals forward, grounded in the schools culture systems. The AP will manage and coach a cohort of teachers, manage and coach the Culture Team, and provide leadership and support for certain school-wide initiatives. The Assistant Principal will need to collaborate with key stakeholders across the middle school, especially the school Culture Team, to ensure fidelity to the culture systems and routines that are in place to maximize teaching and learning time across all classrooms. Vision and StrategyCollaborate with Principal and DCIs to ensure alignment on instructional vision.Model and consistently communicate organizational standards for instruction, classroom culture, content knowledge and continuous learningCommunicate regularly with the Principal, DCIs, Dean of Operations, Dean of Special Education, and Deans of Students, collaborating to problem solve and prioritize issues that impact classroom and / or school culture, retention of team, etc.Review academic programs, initiatives and interventions, annuallyWith the other members of the School Leadership team, ensure the proper functioning of the school via structures and support for staff and students.Report to the MS Principal and Chief of Schools Partnering with the Principal (and Chief of Schools) on key initiatives that support the development of a robust student culture and achievement of school-wide goalsPlan for and facilitate Community Meetings (in partnership with Grade Level Leads) to build and foster community within the MSCommunicate regularly via public spaces emphasizing the importance of our mission, virtues and school prioritiesParticipate in middle school level leadership meetings to ensure alignment on cultural goals and normsReview multiple pieces of data, including attendance, behavioral, and academic data, and lead in development strategies and supports for students who are struggling in classes or during unstructured times, i.e behavioral plansSupport Grade Level Leads in the planning and execution of weekly grade level team meetingsMonitors and improves, as necessary, the systems and routines for students. (i.e.-arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, etc.) Curriculum and InstructionPartner with the Principal, DCIs and Dean of Special Education, to set action plans, as neededEnsure curriculum is aligned with MA Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core Standards, relevant and rigorous enough to ensure fulfillment of school missionTeach up to one section of EthicsSupport teachers with their instructional pacing, aligned to course scope and sequences, to ensure mastery of necessary standardsSupport teachers in the internalization and/or development of UnboundEDs GLEAM (Grade Level, Engaging, Affirming, Meaningful) aligned unit and lesson plans AssessmentProvide thought partnership and direction (as needed) to the Dean of Operations to develop efficient and effective testing plans, in accordance with district parameters and state guidelinesEnsure school staff receive test administrator training as required by DESE, College Board, WIDA, etc.Responsible for the safety and administration of the school facilities including any safety-related drills and procedures.Support the Principal and the Culture Team with investigations of items related to the Code of Conduct, up to and including those that may require suspensions. Partner with school leaders where appropriate and manage all communication and follow-ups with students, faculty, and families including required documentation.Proactively lead and interact with students during breakfast, lunch, transitions, and dismissal to model virtuous behavior.Plan and attend key whole-school and cross-school events both during and after school hours to make connections to engage students inside and outside Boston Prep (i.e Back to School Night, Report Card conferences, student joy events, etc.)Communicate regularly via public spaces (Community Meeting) to promote and align to the school mission.Duties including but not limited to supervising lunch periods, managing swipe and front desk duties, and covering classes in the absence of other staff members.Model and monitor the use of key communication structures (i.e. Deans List, PowerSchool, Smore, etc.) by all members of the Middle School team.As required, conduct investigations of items related to the Code of Conduct, particularly for more serious disciplinary consequences, including long-term suspension and expulsionAdvise school leaders where appropriate and ensure the management of all communication and follow-ups with students, faculty, and families including required documentationOn a consistent basis, review and analyze discipline data and communicate results to important stakeholders (i.e. in check-ins with principal, in grade levels, with students and families, to teachers, etc.)Participate in school academic, athletic, and co-curricular activities to supervise and support all students beyond the school day. School CultureParticipate as a key member of the MTSS Team to design student interventions by partnering with the Health and Counseling team, teachers, students, and families to identify students requiring plans, to create and implement individual intervention plans; proactively communicate the plans and provide regular updates.Ensure alignment of Grade Level Leads to the MTSS Framework and processesEnsure students are on-time and in attendance at school; supervise daily attendance procedures, conduct necessary family follow-up inside and outside of Boston Prep, and monitor and take action related to truancyCover classes for absent staff occasionally, as described in the districts Substitute Coverage Policy Student SupportParticipate as a key member of the MTSS Team to design student interventions by partnering with the Health and Counseling team, teachers, students, and families to identify students requiring plans, to create and implement individual intervention plans; proactively communicate the plans and provide regular updates.Ensure alignment of Grade Level Leads to the MTSS Framework and processesEnsure students are on-time and in attendance at school; supervise daily attendance procedures, conduct necessary family follow-up inside and outside of Boston Prep, and monitor and take action related to truancy Team Development and CoachingObserve MSLT Members in action (i.e. leading department meetings; instructional coaching; PD facilitation, etc) to provide actionable feedback during coachingProvide weekly coaching to the Assistant Principal and Deans of Curriculum and Instruction, in alignment with district priorities; document coaching according to district protocolMaintain a coaching caseload of up to 3 teachers, focused on weekly observation and feedback or weekly data meetings, aligned to districts coaching model Data ManagementDevelop and implement walkthrough protocols to monitor key culture routines and instructional strategies; share and analyze data with MSLT and teachersMaintain a laser focus on organizational goals and associated metrics; monitor progress toward metrics, adjust plans as needed, and develop communication plans around the data that inspire teachers and students alikePrepare for and co-facilitate periodic walkthroughs and data chats with MSLT and Chief Academic OfficerUsing TeachBoost and/or other data tracking systems, monitor the impact of professional development via observation ratings and feedbackMonitor and report on annual school goals, as defined by the Strategic Plan, to the Chief Academic Officer and other stakeholders Professional DevelopmentAttend summer Leadership Academy to prepare for the upcoming school yearPlan, lead, and facilitate key orientation sessions for new and returning middle school team members, in alignment with district priorities and strategiesPlan, lead, and facilitate school-based professional learning sessions, in accordance with the districts PD calendarTrain and support school-based leaders on the characteristics of impactful professional learning design; provide ongoing feedback to leadership team members on professional learning design and facilitation Community EngagementLead school team through annual strategic planning processCollaborate with the Family Manager on initiatives, suggestions, and concerns from parents and familiesPrepare for and facilitate monthly Family Town HallAttending frequent after-school events Compliance and AccountabilityAdhere to all school policies, procedures, and state regulations, including maintaining accurate records and preparing required reports.Respond to PRS complaints filed through DESE Management/SupervisionCreate a professional environment by assuring that interactions with others in the school, community, and School Committee are conducted with utmost respect and professionalism.Monitor staff attendance and schedule attendance meetings in accordance with school policyWrite and implement performance improvement plans for staff members who consistently do not meet expectationsIn consultation with HR, investigate allegations of staff misconduct; hold investigatory meetings; issue investigation outcomesMediate staff conflicts; when principal mediations do not resolve the conflict, consult with HR on next stepsFollow the steps in the annual performance management cycle for all direct reports; ensure all other school-based managers adhere to the annual performance management cycle Professional GrowthConsistently model and practice key leadership routines to stay sharp, including but not limited to: observation/feedback coaching;
