Lead Designer, Mechanical

Provide senior-level mechanical design leadership and technical expertise for complex engineering projects by developing, reviewing, and coordinating detailed drawings and 3D models using advanced CAD systems. This role serves as a subject matter expert in mechanical design, ensuring constructible, code-compliant, and high-quality solutions that meet project objectives, schedules, and business goals.
Responsibilities:Leadership and Direction
- Receive broad guidance regarding project objectives, priorities, and design standards, with significant autonomy in execution.
- Independently apply advanced mechanical design principles, industry standards, and best practices to complex and high-impact assignments.
- Serve as a technical authority for mechanical design, providing guidance, direction, and informal mentoring to designers and project teams.
- Perform senior-level review of mechanical drawings, models, and documentation to ensure quality, accuracy, consistency, and constructability.
- Identify design risks, conflicts, and gaps early and recommend effective solutions.
At the Operational and Company Level
- Collaborate closely with senior engineers, project managers, and discipline leads to support project planning, execution, and delivery.
- Coordinate mechanical design efforts across multiple disciplines to ensure integration with architectural, structural, electrical, and process systems.
- Interface with clients, contractors, vendors, and regulatory agencies to support design coordination, permitting, and approvals.
- Contribute to development and refinement of mechanical design standards, workflows, and best practices.
- Support business development and marketing efforts by contributing technical expertise, design concepts, and proposal content as requested.
Do the Work
- Lead development of complex mechanical drawings, layouts, and 3D models using CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, CADWorks, or similar systems.
- Prepare, review, and approve complete mechanical drawing packages for construction, fabrication, and permitting
- Develop and document detailed design concepts, layouts, submittals, specifications, and production documents.
- Create and maintain accurate 3D mechanical models that comply with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Perform advanced design calculations and support development of material, component, and equipment specifications.
- Provide detailed sketches, redlines, and technical direction for incorporation into construction and fabrication documents.
- Resolve complex design challenges by interpreting incomplete or conflicting inputs and applying sound technical judgment.
- Support QA/QC processes by conducting detailed reviews of drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Assist in preparation of permit applications, construction documents, and opinions of probable construction cost.
- Apply extensive knowledge of fabrication and construction methods to enhance constructability and efficiency of designs.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent commensurate experience required.
- Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering, architecture, or a related discipline preferred.
- Ten (10+) or more years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical design and drafting.
- Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD, CADWorks, or comparable mechanical design software.
- Demonstrated experience producing and coordinating complex 3D mechanical models and drawing packages.
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical design standards, fabrication methods, and construction practices.
- Proven ability to process and manage engineering changes to existing drawings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Primarily indoor professional office environment, which can consist of possible bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
- Mobility around an office environment.
- Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
- Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
- Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.
- Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.

Salary and eligible variable compensation (if any) commensurate with experience. Range $107,000 - $125,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
