Fast paced, high volume upper extremity orthopedic hand surgery private practice looking for a certified medical assistant to cover maternity leave from September through November full time (30-40 hours), then transition to part time starting in December (15-20 hours) While working full time, employee needs to be available to commute to Natick, Concord and Littleton with a set schedule. Part time hours are only in Concord and Littleton.
Role and Responsibilities
The Medical Assistant supports clinical care rendered by the surgeon, providing a range of pre and post-treatment services in the office. The ideal candidate must be able to work autonomously under the direction of the surgeon, be highly organized and detail oriented, providing excellent and responsive customer service in a fast-paced environment. Must have strong people skills to efficiently serve our patients prior to and during their office visit. Candidate must also be able to work as a team with Radiology Tech and Reception staff to ensure seamless patient flow. MA's also communicate with patients via telephone and Patient Gateway quite frequently so electronic and phone communication must be top notch.
Specific job responsibilities include:
- Greets patients and accompanies them to exam rooms; assists with transfers into wheelchair and/or to the x-ray room if necessary.
- Ensures that required laboratory, x-ray, and diagnostic test reports (i.e., MRI, EMG) are in the patient’s e-chart prior to their appointment. Reviews previous office notes in order to prepare a properly documented HPI for the current office visit.
- Takes an accurate patient history based on the patient’s personal medical history form; conducts and records required vital signs and records and/or updates each of these in the patient’s e-chart prior to the surgeon’s portion of the office visit. Verifies the accuracy of previously collected patient information as required for follow-up and post-operative visits.
- Ensures that required x-rays have been ordered prior to the patient’s arrival
- Assists the surgeon as required or requested with cast application and removal, suture removal, joint injections, and dressing changes.
- Assists in turning over exam rooms in preparation for the next patient, ensuring that exam rooms are clean and stocked for each new patient.
- Answers patient questions, checking and responding to flags/alerts throughout the day; forwards queries to surgeons, responds to patients and/or staff and records as required in EMR. CMA will be required to help answer and triage clinical concerns/questions that come in on the phone throughout the day.
- Completes prescriptions electronically, as requested by the surgeons.
- Maintains an appropriate inventory of medical/surgical supplies; ensures that supplies, equipment and forms have been replenished in each exam/treatment room at the end of each clinic session.
Qualifications and Education Requirements/Required Skills
- At least three years of prior office practice experience, preferably in a surgical practice. Orthopedic experience is highly desired. Certification as a medical assistant required.
Familiarity with computerized scheduling and telephone systems required; prior experience with electronic medical record systems (particularly Epic) highly desirable. Ability to use Microsoft Office product suite (Word, Teams, Outlook) and web-based programs.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high volume office environment while maintaining good judgment; ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously, to prioritize duties as required and as conditions dictate.
Ability to travel as required to all offices. Must have reliable transportation.
