General Laborer – Pipe Laying (Water & Sewer)
Job Description
This role supports pipe laying and foundation work on large-scale water, sewer, drainage, and utility projects. You will work outdoors on commercial job sites, assisting with installation of underground utilities, foundations, and related infrastructure while following safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Report directly to assigned job sites each day and work a typical schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Assist with pipe laying activities for water, sewer, drainage, and other underground utilities on commercial job sites.
- Support foundation work, including preparation, layout, and basic site tasks to ensure proper installation.
- Work on a variety of project types, including water lines, drainage systems, electrical and telephone utilities, gravity sewer mains, sewer force mains, and sewer pump stations.
- Perform general construction and industrial labor tasks, including site preparation, cleanup, and material handling.
- Assist with excavation and trenching activities to prepare for utility and pipe installation.
- Handle and position piping and related materials safely and efficiently under direction of supervisors.
- Use shovels and basic hand tools for light grading, backfilling, and site leveling around installed utilities.
- Work around heavy equipment and support equipment operators as needed, following all safety protocols.
- Follow instructions from foremen and supervisors to complete tasks on schedule and to required specifications.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the project.
- Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations while working outdoors and around excavation and heavy equipment.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of water and sewer experience on construction projects.
- At least 3 years of pipe laying experience on commercial job sites.
- Hands-on experience with foundation work in a construction environment.
- Experience with pipe laying for water, sewer, and drainage systems.
- Experience in construction or industrial labor, including utility labor tasks.
- Experience working around excavation activities and trenches.
- Ability to work safely and effectively outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, digging, and prolonged standing.
- Comfort working around heavy equipment and understanding of basic site safety practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with piping systems for water, sewer, and related utilities.
- Dirt work experience, including light grading with a shovel.
- Familiarity with heavy equipment on construction sites.
- MA 2A/1C license to operate machines (preferred but not required).
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with field crews and supervisors.
- Ability to follow directions and adapt to changing tasks and site conditions.

Work Environment
This position is 100% outdoors on construction sites located primarily on the South Shore, with no work in the city. Projects include town and municipal jobs focused on water, sewer, drainage, and related utilities. You will work standard daytime hours, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., alongside field crews and heavy equipment operators on large job sites. The role involves frequent exposure to weather, uneven terrain, excavation areas, and active construction activities, requiring appropriate workwear and adherence to all site safety requirements
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of CARVER, MA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $35.00/hr.
