General Summary

Respiratory Care Adjunct Faculty are responsible for implementing the clinical component of their assigned respiratory care course. This includes participation in scheduled on-campus skills labs, referred to as Bootcamp (four consecutive 8-hour days per semester, held Wednesday through Saturday), as well as one 8- or 12-hour clinical day per week at their assigned clinical site.

Faculty support the attainment of student learning outcomes by providing clinical supervision, instruction, and evaluation in both lab and clinical settings. The role of adjunct respiratory care faculty is to guide and mentor students through the Respiratory Care program and prepare them for RRT credentialing through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

In addition, adjunct faculty promote the development of clinical reasoning and sound judgment through active instruction in communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making.

This position’s responsibilities are carried out at both the clinical site and in the laboratories at Labouré College of Healthcare, based on scheduled competencies and activities.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Attend clinical faculty meetings scheduled prior to the start of each semester.
  • Adhere to all Labouré College of Healthcare Respiratory Care policies, as outlined in the Student Handbook.
  • Follow course syllabi to guide instruction and align clinical experiences with defined student learning outcomes.
  • Promote high standards of clinical excellence and professional behavior in all interactions with students, faculty, and clinical staff.
  • Provide students with constructive and timely feedback, and complete evaluations using the Trajecsys® Clinical Management Tracking system.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, arrange makeup time as needed, and communicate absences or scheduling concerns with the Director of Clinical Education (DCE).
  • Complete and document student clinical check-off competencies in the Trajecsys® Clinical Management Tracking system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Communicate concerns related to student progress, performance, conduct, or integrity to the Program Director (PD) and DCE promptly.
  • Identify and report student challenges in the clinical setting, including:
    1. Deficiencies in knowledge, skills, or technical competence
  • Immediately communicate concerns to the PD and DCE about:
    1. Unprofessional behavior or attitudes detrimental to patient care or the learning environment
  • Serve as a professional role model, demonstrating responsible, ethical, and competent respiratory therapy practice.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and current standards of respiratory care in all clinical instruction.
  • Participate in ongoing faculty development and inter-rater reliability training as assigned by the PD and DCE.
  • Uphold all legal and professional standards governing respiratory care practice
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate of Science degree in Respiratory Care from a CoARC-accredited program.
  • A valid Registered Respiratory Therapist credential and current active Respiratory Care license in good standing.
  • Must be currently employed by a healthcare facility or hospital that holds a valid and active clinical affiliation agreement with Labouré College of Healthcare. Employment at such a facility is required to ensure access to students, compliance with clinical site policies, and alignment with institutional agreements.
  • Two years of clinical respiratory experience required.
  • AHA Certified in BLS for Healthcare Professionals
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience in higher education as a clinical or didactic instructor or hospital clinical instructor/preceptor
  • Greater than five years of clinical respiratory experience
  • AHA Certified in ACLS
Competencies and Skills Required
  • Competent in personal computer applications and email.
  • Training will be required for competence in clinical skills in the areas of teaching.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to delegate and manage small groups.
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Clinical and/or instructional experience in the specific respiratory field (E.g., Pediatrics)
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • This position’s responsibilities are carried out at the faculty members’ place of employment and in the laboratories at Labouré College of Healthcare, depending on the scheduled activity or competency.
  • Some physical effort is required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and/ or walk for an extended period in a clinical patient care setting. Some travel is required.
