Machine Operator
Malden, MA
$19 - $21 depending on experience
Shifts: 3:45 pm - 1:45 am; 4:45pm - 2:45am; 5:45pm - 3:45am and rotate for 4 - days a week

POSITION SUMMARY:

Prepare for packaging runs. Learn the various changes required for each product and customer. Ensure proper product is packed according to customer specifications. Communicate equipment failures to Supervisor and/or Maintenance. Follow all safety procedures during operation.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

• Set up equipment in preparation for run
• Change equipment as needed for packaging switches during shift
• Pack product in boxes, bags, trays, or other packaging methods according to customer specifications
• Ensure product is at specified weight and length. Discard irregular pieces
• Communicate problems to Supervisor
• Ensure that proper amount of boxes or packaging materials are available for the runs
• Ensure that product is free of foreign matter
• Follow all GMP’s, safety, security and allergen policies
• Complete other tasks and duties as assigned

COMPETENCIES:

• Processing: Operators must know their job and equipment. They must have appreciation for other related areas and how they affect production and product quality.
• Equipment Adjustments: Operators must know the operation of their equipment (start-up, changeovers, minor adjustments, cleaning).
• Bakeshop Calculations: Operators must understand math related to job performance and how it affects production costs.
• Flour Specifications: Operators should be aware of flour variations and how specs are set by the baking company.
• Product Evaluation: Operators must know product quality standards and be aware of performance against standards.
• Production Trends: Operators don’t need to know new trends in baking, but must realize jobs may change due to them.
• Standards of Identity: General knowledge required to instill pride in product produced.
• Production Techniques: Know product line and machinery operation, and how it fits into total operation.
• Physical Dough Testing – Crust/Crumb: Know enough to inform Supervisor if something is malfunctioning.
• Technical Literature: Operators should use training and resources for better performance.
• Equipment Operation: Follow correct safety, operation, and sanitation procedures for equipment.
• Energy Consumption: Must ensure proper equipment operation and report changes affecting energy use.
• Food Product Safety: Understand food safety principles in area of responsibility.
• Other Competencies: Understand and observe safety/plant rules; participate in quality programs; maintain good attendance; follow directions explicitly; maintain a good attitude and be responsible for actions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

• Experience in a commercial bread baking setting preferred, not required
• Experience in a manufacturing environment preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Ability to communicate with Supervisors and bakery personnel

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC:

• Baking certifications (AIB or other industry-recognized leader) preferred but not required
