MH Phlebotomy Supervisor
SUMMARY:
Reports to a Pathology Manager or to the Director and is responsible for operational management of the Phlebotomy program at assigned locations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interviews applicants for employment. Schedules, orients, trains, manages Payroll for, assigns work to, evaluates and, when necessary, authoritatively recommends the employment, discipline and discharge of a subordinate staff of phlebotomy and clerical personnel.
Implements and interprets established department policies and procedures. Develops and recommends policies and procedures specific to phlebotomy program. Coordinates with other hospital departments as well as phlebotomy staff to implement changes in policies and procedures.
Establishes and monitors quality controls for program.
Monitors and evaluates the quality of work.
Monitors the work flow to ensure that procedures, specimens, reports, and the like are efficiently processed according to established quality control standards.
Coordinates with laboratory to investigate abnormal test results and takes appropriate measures to obtain quality specimen.
Investigates incidents such as patient complaints or non-adherence to policies and procedures.
Takes appropriate action as authorized to resolve, referring more serious clinical matters to supervisor for action.
Completes required reports and communicates as necessary with departments involved.
Provides for clinical experience of phlebotomy and medical technology students. May provide in-services as needed to other hospital personnel (i.e. Nursing) on phlebotomy techniques and policies.
Regularly performs phlebotomizing of patients including rounds on designated unit.
Provides technical advice and functional guidance to subordinates on phlebotomy patients, generally assisting with, or performing, more complex procedures.
Responsible for managing operations of satellite laboratory including phlebotomizing of patients, specimen handling and coordinating the billing process for all phlebotomy procedures in satellite laboratory.
Maintains department statistics and reports on patients phlebotomized, specimen collection and other department activities.
Maintains regular contact with other Hospital employees and physicians in communicating testing data, procedures, etc.
Responsible for ordering and maintaining expendable supplies for Phlebotomy program and satellite laboratory.
Gathers data and provides assistance in the preparation of budgets for assigned areas.
Assists in monitoring and inspecting central and satellite phlebotomy laboratory for compliance with various accrediting regulations (CAP, TJC) and safety standards.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
A level of knowledge generally acquired through completion of a Medical Laboratory Technician program. Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or Medical Technology preferred. Certification in phlebotomy preferred through the National Pathology Society or National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Services.
The administrative ability to manage the operation of the phlebotomy program, assuring that procedures are efficiently performed and that all quality controls are followed.
Technical knowledge of phlebotomy procedures in order to function as a technical resource for subordinate employees.
Interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with all levels of personnel within the Hospital.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
Three to five years of progressively more responsible work experience is required, including one year of lead or supervisory experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in a normal patient care environment. Exposure to communicable diseases while administering to patients, however chance of injury are minimized by the adherence to established infection control procedures.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervisory responsibilities for up to 25 FTE’s.
Pay Range:
