POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Think Tank is a woman-owned small business with more than 27 years of proven success delivering exceptional marine and fisheries services to the federal government. We are currently seeking an ideal candidate for the position of Animal Handler/Technician to support an upcoming proposal with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Résumé of successful candidate(s) will be included with our proposal.
The Animal Handler/Technician supports the handling, sampling, and care of marine animals during field surveys, tagging operations, and stranding response activities. This role includes preparing equipment, ensuring humane treatment, and supporting sample collection.
RESPONSBILITIES:
- Assist in the safe handling and restraint of marine mammals or sea turtles during research activities.
- Prepare and sterilize field equipment and supplies for sampling, tagging, or health assessments.
- Collect biological samples (e.g., tissue, blubber, blood) and assist with data recording.
- Support stranding response, necropsy activities, and post-field sample processing.
- Maintain equipment inventory and adhere to animal care and safety protocols.
- Create field activity and analyses summaries for MMPA research permit
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Experience handling marine or large animals in a research, rehabilitation, or veterinary context.
- Knowledge of sampling protocols and animal handling safety standards.
- Physically able to lift and restrain animals, work in rugged conditions, and travel for fieldwork.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols
- Level 1: assistant to the co-Principal Investigator with general experience working with wildlife
- Level 2: assistant to the co-Principal Investigator with some experience working with wildlife and qualified small boat operator
- Level 3: demonstrated proficiency working independently with wildlife (ex. Veterinary technician)
