Engineer Director

North American Renewables
Canton, MA

Job Description

Job Description

North American Renewables (NAR) is seeking an established renewable energy and engineering professional to lead our well-established and proven internal engineering team. Yes, we have an internal engineering team! This is an extremely unique opportunity as it is rare in the renewable EPC industry to have a team like this in-house. This individual will lead our team of extremely talented associates (including PE's, EITs, and engineering professionals) as part of our overall EPC team. In this role, your team will be responsible for (on projects that NAR serves as the EPC Contractor) the development and creation of stamped final construction drawings for all civil, electrical, and structural components (primarily) of ground mount solar fields and battery storage systems throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions. In addition, you will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with the construction side of our business as NAR self-performs the mechanical installation (foundations, racking and modules) with our proprietary equipment as you work alongside our sister company (PEC of CT) for the low voltage electrical installations. Yes, your colleagues will construct the full electrical and structural systems from your drawings. Finally, you have a 40,000 SQ FT prefabrication and UL listed electrical manufacturing facility on site in Canton, MA where we drive Lean initiatives, manufacture our proven products, and control our destiny in the field. You'll watch products from your construction sets come to life a few hundred feet from your desk. You'll have strong relationships with those in the field to drive continuous improvement efforts with constant feedback loops to feed into best practices.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a desire to work alongside your colleagues while also developing and mentoring talent on your team. This role will sit on the NAR leadership team with other talented Directors and Vice Presidents and will have direct exposure and interactions with the executives at the very top of the organization (including the Owner of both NAR and PEC).

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the business development team (sales, preconstruction, procurement) to understand the pipeline, project deadlines, budgets, and establish design execution strategies in a very fluid and demanding EPC market
  • Lead your team in execution on the agreed upon strategy and deadlines for our projects
  • Lead your team through diligence preparation and communication with authorities having jurisdiction on development packages provided by clients for our projects to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations during final design and construction.
  • Manage the creation of stamped final construction drawings for civil, electrical, and structural components of solar and battery storage systems
  • Communicate with our EPC customers and vendors / suppliers directly on drawing reviews, conduct product due diligence, and ensure compliance with customer design standards and approved vendor lists
  • Oversee NAR's coordination efforts with utilities for interconnection and commissioning
  • Collaborate with the construction and operations teams to drive the projects through (ministerial) permitting, customer reviews (comment periods), and move the projects towards the issuance of NTP – keep us on schedule!
  • Construction administration and project closeout support for construction and quality teams to ensure quality product to the field and ultimate end users.
  • At times, contract with third party consultants to perform engineering and professional services such as capacity testing, survey, perform market diligence, and alleviate internal bandwidth constraints at workflow peaks during the year
  • Develop your team seminars and training/learning exercises for the group to increase overall knowledge of national and regional requirements and standards for solar installation.
  • Develop process improvements in conjunction with other engineering disciplines, sales, estimating and construction operations teams to increase company profitability and client experience

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in relevant area – such as electrical, mechanical, civil or renewable energy engineering
  • Experience: 5-10 Years of professional experience in Solar and BESS construction with time in a engineering leadership role
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of PV and BESS systems such as permitting requirements, storm water design, electrical design, performance modeling, grid interconnection, and fluency with the necessary software
  • Financial Knowledge: Deep understanding of what drives ROI on the customer side while also knowing what maintains budgets and drives profitability on projects for NAR.
  • Communication Skills: Possesses excellent communication ability to support project teams, collaborate with other departments, while further building the competency of your team
  • Problem Solving: This is a fast-paced and fluid environment where things can change rapidly and require active risk mitigation and problem-solving efforts. Our director of engineering must be willing to roll up their sleeves and dive in with the team. We are looking for a leader who is willing to get into the work with your team and colleagues to create or find solutions.
